Resumen
La novela se sitúa en un trayecto de tranvía por Madrid, desde el barrio de Salamanca hacia Pozas, donde el narrador coincide con su amigo don Dionisio Cascajares. Durante el viaje, entre el apretado gentío y el paquete de libros que lleva consigo, escucha las insinuaciones del médico sobre una condesa, su marido, un joven y un antiguo mayordomo, en torno a un conflicto de celos y posible escándalo. La conversación avanza mientras el coche pasa por distintas zonas de la ciudad y el narrador muestra una curiosidad intermitente por el asunto.
