Summary
This history traces Ukraine from the rise of the first dynasty at Kiev and the baptism of Volodymyr and his court, through the period when Kiev became a major Christian center and a respected power in Europe. It then follows the decline of Rus-Ukraine after internal conflict, nomad and Mongol attacks, and later pressures from Polish influence and the fall of Constantinople. The narrative turns to the revival of Ukrainian culture and the emergence of the Kozaks and the Zaporozhian Sich on the frontier.
