Summary
Set in an English village vicarage, the novel centers on the clergyman’s household, his younger wife Griselda, and the disruptive presence of parish life. Tensions build around the opinionated Colonel Protheroe, a strict curate, church finances, and a parishioner’s complaint, all filtered through the vicar’s dry, uneasy view of his home and congregation. The story is framed as a murder mystery in which these everyday quarrels and suspicions gather around the vicarage.
