Summary
A young Philadelphia lawyer is sent to Canada to trace the long-missing James Hogarth, whose estate may pass to the British crown. His search leads him toward Craighead Hall, a remote place surrounded by rumor, where locals warn that its owner, Hugh Craighead, keeps company with criminals and that visitors may not return safely. The narrator, drawn by the case and by the promise of proving himself, travels alone through the wilderness toward this unsettling destination.
