Summary
After her father’s funeral, Lilah Norris returns to his New York apartment and takes stock of the life he left behind. She reflects on their difficult bond, his love of books, and the fact that he has left her without money, even as she feels newly free and intent on shaping her own future. The opening centers on her self-awareness, grief, and restless sense of possibility in 1920s New York society.
