Summary
Two twin sisters, Heather and Bluebell, are left to manage life in an old country house after their grandmother’s death. As one returns from a wet errand, the sisters talk by the fire about their newfound independence, their daily duties, and the books they have been reading. Heather worries that too much reading is unsettling their conduct, while Bluebell enjoys the freedom and the lively worlds the books open to her.
