Summary
In Piperock, Ike Harper and Dirty Shirt Jones watch a Fourth of July dispute unfold among Judge Steele, Magpie Simpkins, and other townsmen over which nearby town is the proper holiday rival and which national figure deserves credit for the day. The talk turns comic and tense as the men argue politics, patriotism, and local pride in the saloon and on the sidewalk. When the question of responsibility for the Fourth is put to the judge and Magpie, their evasive answers only deepen the confusion.
