Magpie Simpkins and Ike Harper are traveling by jackass toward a new settlement called Pinto when they meet three men on the road. The men turn out to be the mayor, police chief, and treasurer of Pinto, and their talk shifts to the town’s problems, including the need for a schoolteacher. Their story centers on how their marriages and the search for a teacher have become tangled with a scheme involving exchanged photographs and mistaken identities.
