Summary
Set in the Lonestar Agro region, the story follows Rick Theron on the night of a farewell party before he leaves farm life behind. He has been chosen by a Machine to pair with a Mech, a prospect that unsettles him and prompts joking from friends who treat the assignment as both an honor and a strange fate. The gathering is shaped by the community’s affection for Rick and by his parting with Barie, who insists on dancing with him that night.
