Summary
Hashknife Hartley and Sleepy Stevens arrive at William Lanpher’s San Francisco home after being recommended by the Cattlemen’s Association. The story opens with the two cattle-country men standing out in fog and rain, then being shown into Lanpher’s richly furnished house, where their rough talk and comic exchange contrast with the setting. Lanpher explains that he wrote to the association because he wanted the best man it could recommend.
