Summary
Jack Brag centers on the banter between Mrs. Brag, a widow who keeps a tallow-chandler’s shop, and her son Jack, who prefers hunting, racing, and fashionable society to the family trade. Jack tries to pass among gentlemen while concealing his connection to the shop, and he boasts about his sporting exploits and his hopes of gaining entry to elite circles such as the Travellers. The opening establishes a comic tension between commerce, social ambition, and the fear of being exposed as the son of a tradeswoman.
