Summary
The volume opens with Sir North Saunders, now sixty, still much the same in habits and outlook, but newly taking on the duties of a justice of the peace after a long political life. It reflects at length on the machinery of British lawmaking and the role of unpaid magistrates, questioning how such offices are filled and how they function in practice. The chapter list shows a substantial continuation of the novel’s story across seventeen chapters.
