Summary
Set in the Chinook Valley, a cattle country controlled by ranch owners and narrowed by Poncho Pass, the story centers on the Cross L ranch and its stern owner, Cross L Marshall. Jess Marshall returns with Clell Danert, who presses her about marriage and then speaks privately with her father. The opening also introduces the valley’s isolation, the ranch hierarchy, and the uneasy tone around Danert’s place in the household.
