Summary
Set in Piperock, Montana, the story centers on talk in a saloon about how the town will observe the Fourth of July. Magpie Simpkins, the sheriff, and other regulars argue over a safe-and-sane holiday, a baseball game between the Triangle and Seven-A outfits, a patriotic speech, and a promised surprise attraction. The men also discuss recent baseball lessons brought back from Chicago and the risk of old-fashioned speeches stirring up trouble.
