Summary
Godfrey Thomas Vigne’s travel account follows his 1831 voyage from Liverpool to New York and his aim to observe the United States over about six months with as little prejudice as possible. He describes the Atlantic passage, arrival through the Narrows, and his first impressions of New York, especially Broadway, the city hall, the prison, and the intense commercial life along the waterfront. The book is presented as a travel narrative on the United States and Canada.
