Summary
Shelby Romaine returns to Moon Flats after serving time for a bank robbery conviction that rested largely on eyewitness identification and circumstantial evidence. The story opens in the cow town as he studies the place and meets two old acquaintances, Newt Bowie and Monte Barnes, while the book establishes his strained past, family reputation, and uncertain place in the range country.
