Summary
Dobie Dixon is a fifteen-year-old border boy living alone near the Mexican border after his father, a revenue officer, is killed while trying to stop contraband smugglers. Though he is urged to follow in his father’s footsteps, Dobie has drifted into a hard life around the border officers and cares most for little Jane Langdon. When he sees a smoke signal in the hills and reports it, the men discuss how hard it is to police the long border against smuggling.
