Summary
In summer 1920, Ralph Wallace and Julian Conrad are driving through the French countryside on an unplanned tour of north and mid-France. While following a winding road near the Marne, they come upon the Château Grammont, and Conrad is immediately stirred by memories of having spent a month there during the war. The novel begins with their journey into a district marked by both scenic beauty and war scars, and with the château’s appearance reviving mixed recollections for Conrad.
