Summary
Set in a prison governed by strict routine, the story follows a governor’s ordinary day of inspections, correspondence, petitions, and preparations around a condemned prisoner. The opening establishes the prison’s ritual order and the familiar procedures surrounding execution, from the cell visit to the planned inquest and burial arrangements. That order is abruptly disturbed when a visitor arrives to see the condemned man and confronts the governor with a revolver.
