Summary
This autobiographical fiction follows a young man moving through Greenwich Village after the war, where he enters a lively circle of artists, radicals, and social idealists. At a party in a smart downtown house, he observes the host, hostess, and guests while measuring himself against their confidence, politics, and glamour. His reflections show how his views have been shaped by his friend Hugo Bamman, by wartime experience, and by a growing skepticism toward money and conventional status.
