Summary
Vernon Randall Hume, a corporation lawyer and father of three, is trapped on a devastated Earth during an alien invasion by gray, mechanized soldiers. Exhausted and injured, he hides in a swamp after witnessing the killing of a woman, while memories of his previous life and family keep breaking through his fear. The story follows his struggle to survive in a ruined landscape where distance, hunger, and terror no longer feel familiar.
