Summary
Set in African American domestic life across Virginia and New York, the book follows Joel Marshall, the son of people marked by slavery, as he turns childhood dreams of greatness into work, business, and church standing. It also shows his marriage, his wife’s modest outlook, and the birth of a son whose name becomes a point of disagreement because of Joel’s hopes for the child’s future.
