Summary
Robert Bloch’s science-fiction story sends Thomas Jefferson, John Hancock, Benjamin Franklin, and Charles Thomson into Independence Hall on the morning of July 4, 1776. The men speak in gangster slang while Franklin tries to keep their operation on track, with time-travel details and modern intrusions complicating the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The setup centers on a comic attempt to revise the document before the rest of Congress arrives.
