Summary
Set in Greenwich Village, this novel follows Jack Mann, a thirty-three-year-old Manhattan draftsman whose war service left him wary, cynical, and accustomed to love affairs with young men. Living amid the neighborhood’s artists, bars, and police raids on homosexual hangouts, he moves through a bohemian world marked by secrecy and restless desire. Beebo Brinker appears in an intimate encounter with Paula, where the two women acknowledge loneliness and the possibility of desire between them.
