Summary
The story follows boxer Slade Costigan, a powerful fighter whose chief weakness is that he seems to lose his judgment once he is in the ring. A manager takes him on after seeing both his raw ability and his need for guidance, then tries to turn him from a reckless slugger into a more scientific boxer. As training continues, Costigan shows surprising skill in sparring, yet his strange split between practice and actual fights remains central as he is prepared for a bout with Joe Handler.
