A framed adventure set in the Peruvian Andes follows an American narrator who meets Nicholas Graydon, a mining engineer found gravely ill in a remote village near Chupan. Graydon has come from the feared Cordillera de Carabaya with a strange wound in his neck, and the locals fear both the place and the things he mutters in fever. As the narrator stays with him, he begins to examine Graydon’s background and the mystery surrounding his injuries and journey.
