Summary
Hilaire Belloc’s book opens with a playful preface that explains its title as a deliberate echo of another work, then turns to Professor Higginson, a shy psychologist at Guelph University in Ormeston. After an uneasy evening party at Sir John Perkin’s house, he tries to leave unnoticed but finds that his familiar grey Inverness coat is missing, and he begins to question whether he had worn it at all.
