Summary
This short story centers on a woman’s long friendship with Thalia Corson and the marriage around her to Winchester Corson, a businessman whose moods and flirtations strain the household. The narrator recalls summers on the Cape and later visits to the Corsons’ Long Island home, where Thalia’s composure and distance conceal much of her life. The story also brings in the couple’s children and the narrator’s reflections on different kinds of love and the uneasy history that resurfaces in New York.
