Summary
Set in a New York family home during the war years, the novel centers on Ann as she tries to manage the uneasy balance between her husband Peter, her lively children, and her mother, Mrs. Reed, who has come to stay after a long illness. The household is outwardly calm, but old tensions remain between Ann and her mother, especially as Mrs. Reed judges the children and Peter resents her presence. The story focuses on domestic routines, strained affection, and the difficulty of living together across generations.
