Summary
On Betelgeuse, a member of the Interstellar Patrol listens as the chief explains that interstellar commerce is being threatened by the cosmic cloud near the galaxy's center. Ships that approach the immense region of darkness have been pulled inside and lost, first in hundreds and then in thousands, with no clear sign of what causes the danger. The Patrol has already sent cruisers to investigate, but the source of the force remains unknown.
