Summary
A frame narrator in a busy port meets a large Englishman who is disturbed by the sound of a gong and begins telling why it unnerves him. Bill Kirby recounts how he and John Conrad, an American bug collector, trekked into the unknown back country of Somaliland after hearing a mysterious voice from the jungle. As their expedition moved deeper into wild country, local carriers grew frightened by tales of a curse, then deserted, while the strange sound continued to draw the two men onward.
