Summary
In rural Massachusetts in 1896, a man researching genealogy takes shelter from a storm in an isolated, timeworn farmhouse near Arkham. The house seems abandoned at first, but its neglected interior, dim rooms, and pervasive antiquity suggest long seclusion and an unsettling past connected to the old Puritan families of the region.
