Summary
Set after Culloden, the novel follows David Scott, a young Scots prisoner in Edinburgh who fears hanging or transport to Virginia and refuses to accept either fate. After escaping from the Tolbooth, he makes his way through the stormy city to hide with Sandy Scott, where he waits in secrecy while soldiers search for him and he remains uneasy about leaving Scotland. Secluded in a loft, he passes the time with food, news, and a Bible, while still thinking of a place in the glen he hopes to reach.
