Summary
At Wistaria Lodge in Port Cardinal, the boarders gather around the radio and spar over jazz, programs, and the habit of leaving the set on. Miss Bascom, the hostess, manages the household while several residents, including a professor, a mathematics teacher, and members of the local station’s staff, trade opinions about broadcasting and its effects on their shared life. The opening also hints at shifting social and romantic tensions among the lodgers.
