Summary
Set in Manila’s hot Walled City near Burton Field, the story follows an Army pilot-narrator and his companion Prop Owens, who can identify people by voice and becomes unsettled after hearing a familiar one. Prop recognizes the speaker as Eddie Bride, a pilot known in the Service as a jinx, and his reaction suggests a past connection and concern over another man, Bert Allen. The opening establishes a tense air-service situation, local landmarks, and the heat and routines of military life in the Philippines.
