Summary
Set in an Arizona hotel and framed by a ranchman’s uneasy reaction to a man he believes he has seen from the past, the story begins with Major Remington Meeker and his nephew talking over the possible return of Gamblin’ Dan Glade. The major says he shot Dan years earlier in Texas and now fears Dan may be alive and seeking revenge, prompting him to explain the old trouble as he arms himself and starts recounting their days together in Tapwater.
