Summary
The book presents an autobiographical account of a girl born in Camden Town in 1887 who grows up amid poverty, family breakup, and repeated changes of guardians. She describes being passed among relatives, sent to a convent school with little education, and enduring beatings and neglect in several homes. After running away from her grandfather’s house, she is taken by a policeman to a police station and then to a workhouse, from which her grandmother later removes her.
