Set in Hollywood, this horror story follows an assistant director at Summit Pictures during a party where a mysterious European performer, Chevalier Futaine, is being promoted as a vampire-like figure. The narrator also becomes concerned with the collapse of star Hess Deming after his wife Sandra’s recent death, which he believes was tied to a strange illness and her fear of fire. As rumors, publicity, grief, and unease gather around the film world, the narrator senses something sinister behind the glamour.
