Summary
Set at a Long Island flying field, the story follows Ray Folsom and his backer, Mrs. Jarvis Benham, as they prepare the Silver Bird for a nonstop flight from New York to Warsaw. Ray, a veteran pilot with wartime and mail-flying experience, sees the attempt as a chance to achieve long-sought fame, while Mrs. Benham is determined to become the first woman to cross the Atlantic by air. Reporters, weather concerns, and the strain of takeoff frame the moment when the great machine finally gets airborne.
