Summary
Set in a cattle-ranching town, the story follows Ike after he writes and mails a violent challenge to Phil Hughes, whom he believes has been stealing calves. Soon after, Ike discovers that his revolver is not usable and must be sent away for repair, leaving him unarmed at the very moment he unexpectedly runs into Hughes in town. The arrival of the sheriff offers Ike a sudden opening as the standoff develops.
