Summary
In Monte Vista, Sheriff Joe Cook and deputy Shorty McKay receive a letter from private detectives who claim a fugitive is heading to town to recover buried treasure. Shorty connects the warning to Jefferies Brofman, a former mining company secretary who disappeared years earlier with company funds and whose old mansion on Gopher Hill is widely regarded as haunted. The sheriff consults old records and prepares to catch Brofman if he returns.
