Summary
On an excursion steamer on the Hudson, Eddie Collins stands apart from the dancing, laughing passengers, brooding over the social world around him. A lively young woman with a ukulele notices him and begins to draw him into conversation, while her quieter companion stays in the background. The opening presents a brief encounter marked by flirtation, resentment, and Eddie’s wary, hard-edged response to the crowd.
