Summary
Robert E. Howard’s historical adventure follows Tamerlane and the aftermath of the Battle of Nicopolis, where Bayazid’s Turkish forces defeat the crusading army. Seen through the Tatars, the story dwells on the chaos of combat, the retreat of the Christians, and the grim treatment of the captured and the dead. Ak Boga then moves away from the battlefield on a separate mission, where he notices a wounded knight nearby.
