Summary
At the Bishop’s Palace, Lady Hester Cardew is admired for her energy and charity, yet judged for her beauty, fashion, and unusual independence as a bishop’s wife. The story centers on her husband’s household, where her son Jack Cardew is in love with Mabel Bannister and wants to marry on little money, while the Bishop refuses his consent. Mabel is a well-placed but motherless young woman with uncertain family background, and her presence in the house has created tension.
