Summary
The story is framed as a German submarine commander’s account from the Atlantic during World War I, written while his boat lies disabled. After sinking a British freighter, the U-29 crew recover a strange ivory carving from a dead sailor, and soon the men begin to suffer disturbing visions, sickness, and fear. As tension builds aboard the submarine, the commander keeps watch for another target while the crew’s discipline and confidence break down.
