Summary
Anthony Wynne’s The Double Thirteen opens with Hon. Robert Barling, a wealthy, controlled young man, dining at the Monopole Hotel before going to a London ball. There he watches for a pale young woman whose arrival deeply affects him, and when they dance he speaks with unusual urgency about a promise he intends to break. The opening establishes their strained, secret connection and the tension around his determined meeting with her.
