Summary
Frank Westfield is viewed by his ambitious family as a disappointing and unproductive member of the household, despite the steady income he brings home and the work he does for the Barnett Brick Company. He is quietly involved with Ruth Barnett, whose struggling brick company depends in part on his bookkeeping and informal management. The story centers on family disapproval, business pressure in Rocky Ford, and the conflict around Frank’s relationship with Ruth.
