Summary
In this western short story, Sheriff Bill Ludden is repeatedly interrupted by the loud, troublesome Croup Kadem just as he is dealing with court business and a cattle-rustling problem. Seeking a more effective answer, Ludden appoints the swaggering gunman Dud Pilarn as a special deputy and sends him to Tipping Rock to handle Kadem and restore order. The townspeople react with disbelief as the risky arrangement becomes known.
