Es beschreibt zunächst steinerne Arbeitsgeräte der Urzeit, erklärt frühe Verfahren zum Zerteilen von Holz und Steinen und nennt Funde sowie Datierungen aus der älteren und jüngeren Steinzeit. Anhand archäologischer Befunde und Rekonstruktionen wird gezeigt, wie sich einfache gezähnte Steine zu geführten Sägemaschinen entwickelten.
