Die Erzählung führt von der heißen Sommerstadt Berlin in den Norden, wo eine Reise über Trelleborg und Strömstad bis auf die Insel Koster den Erzähler in eine fremde Landschaft versetzt. Im Mittelpunkt stehen seine Wahrnehmungen von schwedischer Küste, Granitwelt und Meeresinseln, die er als radikal anders und fast urzeitlich erlebt, während er zugleich von weiteren Reisen und einem geplanten Buch über Koster spricht.
